Many of the city’s monasteries served as retirement homes for royal and noble women, who either chose or were forced to take the veil and remain in the safety of the convents for the rest of their lives. The Tsars and the supreme feudal nobility showed a great interest in the Novodevichy convent, rendering it all possible financial and legal support. In 1918 the town was renamed into Detskoe Selo (Children’s Village). In 1937 the name was changed into Pushkin, to commemorate the centenary of the great Russian poet’s tragic death. Created for two centuries by many prominent architects, the unique architectural ensemble of Pushkin is world famed for its elegant palaces and pavilions, landscape parks and ponds, 18-century marble statues and historic obelisks. Tsarskoe Selo became the place for official receptions of Russian nobility and representatives of foreign states, who were visiting Russia with diplomatic missions. Today, the theme of reconstruction of the Amber Room is of primary importance. Preserved photographs and archives help the roughly 40 art experts to fashion the barely palm-sized thin amber pieces so that they match the original in shape in color and to carve fine ornaments, thus recreating the legendary work of art like a huge puzzle from over half a million pieces of amber.
